The Middle East Institut was created in 1999 as the Middle East Center for Peace, Culture and Development (the MEC). From 2003 to 2006 the Center, in cooperation with Emory University, won a Title VI National Resource Center grant as the Georgia Middle East Studies Consortium. In 2005 the MEC became the Middle East Institute, an academic unit within the College of Arts and Sciences.
The Middle East Institute at Georgia State University promotes greater understanding of the Middle East, its diverse cultures, languages, and people. The University offers an interdisciplinary degree in Middle East studies. They are also one of two academic units on campus to offer foreign languages: They currently offer Arabic, Hebrew and Turkish.In addition they offer minors in both Arabic  and Middle East Studies and the Middle East Insitute sponsors study abroad trips to countries in the region.
