Near Eastern Studies at the University of Arizona in Tuscan is a multi-disciplinary department focusing on the region known as the Near or Middle East, which includes the Arab world, Iran, Israel and Turkey, providing a full range of language courses in Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Hebrew (through Judaic Studies).
Turkish Language Programm:
Beginning Turkish Courses I, II, III
This Course as foreign language is designed to introduce the Turkish language to beginning students, to develop oral and written skills for both comprehension and expression. Language skills to be emphasized include: understanding, reading, writing, translation, and speaking.
Intermediate Turkish Courses I, II
This Turkish Course at the Center of Near East begins the second year of Turkish language. It is an intermediate course designed to improve language; speaking, reading, comprehension, vocabulary, translation, composition and grammar.
Advanced Turkish Course I, II
This Turkish Course as foreign language aims at solidifying students’ acquired language skills at the intermediate level. Building on this foundation, the course will help students improve all four-language skills: Writing, Speaking, Listening/Comprehension and Reading.
Topics in Turkish Language, Literature, Culture, History & Society
Course content varies by semester. Focus topics may include Ottoman Turkish, and other areas in Turkish language, literature, culture, history and society. Graduate-level requirements include an extra project selecting an Ottoman text related to their research interests, and submitting a short paper summarizing their findings, discussing linguistic challenges presented by the text, and containing a translation of part of the text.
