Studies in the department encompasses the history and civilization of the greater Middle East from the beginning of Islam up to the current day, concentrating on the Arab world, Turkey, Central Asia and Iran as well as those areas which had been under Muslim rule in the past, such as medieval Spain and the Balkans.

The department is separated to four sections:
1) Religion, law and philosophy;
2) Modern history, including the Ottoman Empire;
3) Art and material culture;
4) Medieval history.
